Getting to Know SAOT Technology at the 2022 World Cup
Quoting the Suara.com page. FIFA has announced that semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) or semi-automated offside technology will be used at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. What is Semi-automated Offside Technology? Yu Check out the following explanation...
SAOT is a supporting tool to help the implementation of FIFA. The way this tool works is to observe offsides more accurately, quickly, and more reproducible offside decisions at the biggest stage of all.
This SAOT uses 12 special tracking cameras. This camera will be installed under the roof of the stadium to track the ball until it is able to pay attention to the 29 data points of each player. Every 50 times per second, this camera will calculate the exact position of the player on the field. The 29 data points collected also include limbs and extremes that are relevant to be called offside.
There is also an Intertial Measurement Unit sensor in the sphere that is able to transmit data to the video room. Allows for precise detection of kick points. Before notifying the referee, the organizer will validate the data and check the kick point, the offside line created which is based on the position of the player's foot.
After a decision is confirmed by the video officer and the referee, the data points will then be created into a 3D animation. This animation will show meticulously how the position of the limbs, balls, and lines on the field is displayed on a studio screen from various perspectives.
This SAOT has been tried previously at various events, namely in FIFA tournaments including the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and 2021 FIFA Club World. The data collected in the match has also been analyzed and validated by the MIT Sports Lab team.
